Smashbox Step by Step Contour Stick Trio

I picked up this contour stick trio from Boots at the beginning of this month Link!. I had been eagerly waiting its release, as I have their powder contour palette and was really impressed with it (check out my detailed review here). I have dry skin so I was particularly interested in this trio.
The set consists of three very creamy soft chunky pencils, a highlight, a contour and a bronzing shade. I was delighted to see that Smashbox also included a sharpener for the pencils in the set.

The idea behind contouring and highlighting is to create illusions on the face in order to help sculpt it. This is done by bringing forward the centre of the face by highlighting it, and creating shadows and shading other areas so that they appear to be more reseeded.

The highlight Pencil- This shade has a slight yellow tone to it, and there is no visible glitter or shimmer in the pencil. However it does have a very subtle sheen to it. The texture of this pencil is very soft and creamy. I like to apply it down the centre of my nose, in the centre of my forehead and along the tops of my cheekbones. I also apply it on my cheeks in an upside down triangle shape, when I want to brighten the centre of my face a little more.

The Contour Pencil- This shade is a dark brown and has a grey tone to it - the grey undertone helps to create the illusion of shadows on the face. I apply it in the hollows of my face (underneath my cheekbones), as well as on the outer parameters of my face. I shade the area between my temples and the outer arch of my eyebrow on my forehead - as well as across my hairline - this gives me the illusion of having a smaller forehead.

The Bronze Pencil- This is a very warm bronze shade, again the texture is soft a creamy and blends out effortlessly. However I have found if you over do it with this shade, it's easy to end up looking a little orange! I apply a very small amount between the areas I've highlighted and contoured to warm the complexion up a little.

These pencils allow precise application - I can draw the different shades on exactly where I want them. The shades are very pigmented and look intense when first drawn onto the face. I like to blend them out with my Real Techniques contour brush or a damp beauty blender. When everything is blended out, there is a a very subtle effect left on the face. These shades last about six and a half hours on me once they are set with a powder.
I apply them after my foundation and concealer. Once the shades are blended out, I set everything with my Laura Mercier loose transulcant powder. These contour sticks don't disturb the foundation that's applied underneath - they also don't look heavy or cakey on the skin.

I love the contour shade in this set, I also like the highlight shade. It does brighten the face, however it is definitely more of a subtle highlight. I am a little disappointed that the bronze shade is so warm, but I think with a tan I'd be able to get a way with it. Also, although the wear-time isn't bad I do wish they lasted a little longer on me.
If you have normal/dry skin and like a subtle highlight and contour, then I think you'll really like this trio.

  1. I really want to try these out but I agree that the bronze does look very warm I might not be able to carry it off :/

  2. Sounds like the real win of this trio is the actual contour shade but since I like subtle highlighters it would be nice to have one like this in my collection. Also seems to be a good starter trio for those who never tried cream contour (aka me)! You look stunning with this on, a shame they don't last as long as you wished :/ xx
