I picked up the Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde mascara on a whim a few weeks ago in boots as there was a 3 for 2 offer on all Bourjois products!. Once I started using it I realised that it gave my lashes the same look as the They're Real mascara has given me over the years.

Benefit They're Real Mascara
 Benefit They're Real Mascara
Benefits They're Real mascara Link! has a short bristle plastic wand with a rounded tip, which has tiny spikes sticking out of it. The mascara lifts, separates, lengthens and volumizes my lashes! While these are all positives, there are a few negatives too (more about them later)
I have found that this mascara can be worn two ways, I either apply one quick coat to my lashes (as shown in the below photo) from root to tip (keeping the brush horizontal). Whereas to achieve a more dramatic look I first go from root to tip holding the brush horizontal (as is normal) once I've coated my lashes they look both lengthened and volumized. I then turn the brush vertically and use the tip of the wand to catch the small lashes in the inner corners,  fan out my outer corner lashes and separate the rest of my lashes. I have noticed that using the tip of the wand helps to lift the lashes too. This mascara provides so much lift that I find I need to tight line my upper lash line, as it is more exposed then it would normally be due to the lift!
As great and dramatic as this can make my lashes look, there are a few downsides,  the first being that the tube of mascara dries out very quickly (I am lucky to get a month to six weeks out of it) and the second issue is I have found that if too much mascara is applied, my lashes clump together. The final issue I have with it, is that it is difficult to remove. However if I use the No7 eye make up remover and then follow up with Emma Hardie cleansing balm there is no issue (but sometimes that's too much effort) Benefit have also brought out a specific They're Real eye makeup remover. I haven't tried it yet though!

Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde Mascara
Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde Mascara
The Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde mascara Link! comes in two versions waterproof  and non waterproof. I went for the non waterproof as waterproof formulas can be difficult to remove and I hate having to pull and drag at my eyes.
This mascara has a plastic brush with short bristles with tiny plastic round spheres (balls) dispersed throughout. The mascara evenly coats and separates the lashes while giving them volume with a little length. I have been really impressed with this mascara and have used in almost every day since I bought it!

Both mascaras last all day with no smudging or flaking, have similar wands - they're both plastic wands with short bristles and are similar widths. I can achieve  a very similar look with each of them (depending on how I choose to apply the They're Real).
If I apply the They're Real using the wand horizontally both mascaras give a very similar look. however I can get a much more dramatic look with the They're Real when I use the tip of the wand to give my lashes more lift, definition and length  The other difference is the They're Real does have a tendency to clump my lashes together if more than one coat is applied, which doesn't happen with the Bourjois mascara.
If I was asked which one I prefer, I'd have to say the Bourjois Volume 1 Seconde mascara as I can get a very similar look with both, and the 1 second volume is easier to apply, it doesn't cause my lashes to clump together, it's easier to remove and impressively it's half the price.

  1. I'm also a user of the benefit mascara, but you may have just convinced me to try the other one, especially if it's cheaper! Thanks for an informative post :)

  2. I much prefer the look of the Bourjois 1 second mascara. A lot less clumpy than the They're Real. You just convinced me to buy it too. :) x

  4. I'm a regular user of They're Real, I do exactly the same thing with the wand and find clumping to be an issue too. I received a 1 Second Volume in one of my Beauty Boxes but haven't bothered using it yet (I've been unimpressed with mascaras by Bourjois in the past) but after reading this, I'll definitely experiment with it. Thanks :)

  5. They're Real! is my all time favourite mascara but it is a little on the pricey side! I'm definitely going to give the Bourjois one a go to see how they compare. Great post! :)
